The Ubangi Protestant University (UPU) was founded in 2005 by Mossai Sanguma to provide higher education in the Ubangi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Ubangi region is located in the northwest corner of the Congo with limited accessibility. The region is rich in farm land and surface water and is considered the most fertile land in all of Africa. The decade of war that started in the mid 1990′s further isolated the area and destroyed most of the farming enterprises. Mossai and his family were born and raised in the Ubangi area and they all have a love and dedication to the people of Ubangi. Mossai received his Masters and PhD degrees in America and has returned to Ubangi to launch higher education in the region which will assist in recreating a sustainable local economy. UPU has received full accreditation from the Congolese government and is currently educateing over 300 students in 4 undergraduate and graduate degrees: – Agriculture / Nutrition; Economics / Micro-Financing; Biology; and Theology. UPU is delivering Joy and Hope to students in the Ubangi.
UPU has established a local campus in Gemena, the largest town in the Ubangi region, to offer a wide array of classes in four academic areas. The annual operating budget for UPU in 2012 is less than $90,000 to educate the 300 students. The objective is to have at least 25% of that budget supplied through tuition from the students who have the ability to pay. Tuition is currently set at $50 per quarter per student. The remaining expenses need to be supplied by gifts and grants. In addition, a capital campaign has been launched to build a student study hall / recreation center, dormitory housing for students and visiting teachers (currently most of the students and teachers have to walk over 2 hours a day to attend classes), additional campus class rooms, and a building to house a library and administration staff.
Donations are needed for tuition scholarships, visiting teacher expenses, exchange student expenses, books / lab supplies, computers, solar equipment to provide electrical power, satellite dish to offer Internet services / remote learning capability, capital for campus buildings, and bikes / motorbikes for transportation.
